Paying your American Express bill online

Pay online at americanexpress.com

American Express offers an ability to pay your Amex bill at the americanexpress.com website, and the service is easy to setup and simple to use.

From the Summary of Accounts area within the American Express website, you can click on the image of the Amex card that you want to make a payment against, and the window will expand to reveal a Pay Bill link. Click on that link and a new page will open that allows you to choose to pay your minimum amount due, your current balance, or any other payment amount that you wish to enter. A drop down list lets you select a payment date that ranges from today at the earliest through to the statement due date at the latest. You can pick any day in between that range to schedule your payment.

If you have not done so prior to visiting this page, you’ll need to setup your checking account information with American Express before you can schedule a payment. American Express will lead you though a series of screens where you enter your bank routing and transit number, which are the numbers that run along the bottom of your paper check. American Express will keep your checking account information on file and execute an ACH draft against your bank account for the payment amount on your scheduled payment date.

Any payment that is submitted before 8 PM Mountain Standard Time will receive same day credit against your American Express balance. Future dated scheduled payments will be processed on the date that you selected as the payment date.

Paying your American Express bill at your bank

Another way to make your American Express payment is to use your bank's online bill pay service, or one of the free online bill pay services available on the Web. Most of the online bill pay services will allow you to make your American Express payment with funds from your checking account at no charge to the consumer. Consumers tend to like this approach to paying their bills, because these online bill pay services allow them to pay most, if not all, of their bills online from a single site. This means that all of your online bill pay history can be viewed and tracked from a single website, which can be extremely convenient. The disadvantage is that you usually won't get same day credit for your payment from American Express, and you'll need to login to schedule the payment a day or so in advance of the due date.
